FIVE TIPS FOR MAINTAINING THE ELECTRIC MOTOR BETTER PART 1

It is important to make sure of the electric motors performance is good because they have a significant impact on the productivity and profitability of the enterprise. While operating these motors may seem simple, their condition should not be overlooked. This is why a preventive maintenance (PM) inspection of the motor must be made as part of the management facility’s assets.

By preparing a list for the PM program, the facility ensures that each motor is properly inspected and monitored. This also gives managers the opportunity to identify potential problems and solve them in advance. To do so, expensive repair or accidental costs can be prevented in the event of a complete replacement of the motor.

These five components are critical to the PM plan, which must be executed by the owner on a regular basis.

  1. Execute a visual inspection on the motor

Only a visual inspection of the motor can find a lot of things. Take a closer look at its physical condition and make sure to record any information. If the motor is operating in a harsh environment, it is possible to find signs of corrosion or accumulation of dirt on its various parts. These are presented as a potential internal problem because any fragmentation can limit the device performance.

Make it a point for observing the motor windings and looking for overheated combustion scents. Contacts and relays should also be free from dirt and rust, which are harmful to the life of the motors. Keep the equipment in an environment that is not exposed to dust, moisture, toxic and harsh conditions.

  1. Maintenance inspection of the commutator and brush

Do not wait until the electric motors stop working or experience inconsistent performance. As a part of the PM program, users should carefully look at the brush and commutator. Make sure there are no signs of wear and tear. Excessive brush wear may cause the motor commutation problems. This is why the brush need to be replaced to restore the functionality of the device.

In the same way, the commutator needs to be kept in check. Its natural condition is smooth and polished. It should also have no dents, scratches, or grooves as any rough point is recommended for brush sparks. Check the motor mount, stator, rotor, and the belts. Replace any worn parts that  no longer meet their intended use.
